We have more control than we think...

Full Capacity Living...

Welcome to the Full Capacity Living newsletter!

For those of you who are new and those who haven't been here for a while let me introduce myself.

My name is Karen Bush and I am a Board Certified Functional Medicine Health Coach trained at Duke University and Functional Medicine Coaching Academy as well as the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. In my former life I was a medical speech pathologist working with adults in the hospitals so medicine is my world.

Full Capacity Living is my virtual private practice where I collaborate with functional medicine practitioners/doctors and work with private clients all over the world to support optimizing their health and making sustainable changes.

If there is one thing that I have noticed with my clients that improves their overall health and wellbeing...it would be knowing that they have more control than they think.

Our current health system is more about "let's wait and see" or "take this medication" which has the likelihood to prolong or make things worse eventually.

It's rare that anyone going to see the doctor that hears "what is your daily nutrition?" "how is your sleep and do you have a good sleep routine?" "Do you get enough movement in the day?"

Here is just one client response to my personalized coaching sessions and the progress she is seeing "I never realized that the small things I do in a day could have such a drastic effect on my energy levels and blood sugar, my doctor just lowered my dose!"

These changes were actually small tweaks in her day, not major overhauls.

Here are a few ideas:

  1. Sequence of eating: start with 3-4 bites of veggies, then protein, then fats and last on the list healthy carbohydrates. This will drop your post meal blood sugar significantly.
  2. Move your body for at least 5-10 minutes after each meal. Maybe it's a 10 minute walk or 10 squats. Or ask me about the 4 minute exercise.
  3. Tired in the afternoon? You likely don't need a nap. Make sure you are drinking enough water and getting protein at each meal at a minimum 25 grams.

Here is a great study about how tiny tweaks can lead to increases in longevity. https://www.sydney.edu.au/news-opinion/news/2025/02/27/combine-these-tiny-health-tweaks-for-a-longer-life--say-research.html

The one where they are still performing, still leading, still executing… but something underneath feels frayed. The edge is sharper. The reactivity is quicker. The healthy habits that used to feel non-negotiable start to slip. Sleep shortens.Workouts become inconsistent.Meditation becomes “I’ll get back to it when...

Kindness and a recipe...

Full Capacity Living... This morning I was sitting nearby while my husband had a virtual appointment about his shoulder pain. I half-listened while doing other things — until I realized he wasn’t just answering questions. He was connecting. He does this so well. He values deeper conversations not just surface news, weather and sports and for that I very much appreciate him. At the end of the call, he paused and told the provider how much he appreciated the time he had taken. He said, “I can...
