Let’s talk about a quiet hero in your body—magnesium.

Often overlooked, magnesium is actually one of the most abundant minerals in the body, and it's working hard behind the scenes in nearly every cell you have. From the foods you eat to the supplements you may take, magnesium is everywhere. But many people still aren’t getting enough.

Why Is Magnesium So Important?

Magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzyme systems. That means it helps regulate an incredible range of your body’s core functions, including:

  • Protein synthesis
  • Muscle and nerve function
  • Blood glucose control
  • Blood pressure regulation
  • Energy production

Magnesium also supports:

  • Bone formation and density
  • The synthesis of DNA, RNA, and glutathione, your body’s master antioxidant
  • The balance of calcium and potassium across cell membranes—vital for normal nerve impulses, muscle contractions, and heart rhythm

In functional medicine, we often see that standard magnesium intake recommendations may fall short, especially for individuals under chronic stress, with gut health imbalances, or taking medications that deplete magnesium (like PPI's for reflux, diuretics, or some antibiotics).

A Functional Medicine Approach to Magnesium:

  • RDA for adults: ~310–420 mg/day
  • Functional medicine optimal range: Often 400–800 mg/day (sometimes more, depending on symptoms and clinical context but very personalized)
  • Common indications for higher dosing include:
    • Muscle cramps or spasms
    • Insomnia or restless sleep
    • Constipation
    • Anxiety, irritability, or mood swings
    • Migraines
    • Blood sugar or blood pressure dysregulation
